America's Rule of Law Report
Most governments suffer from delusions of permanence. The United States is no different. The ability of any democratic government to persist involves a consensus on the part of its citizens about the ideals and values of its culture. Americans’ beliefs about the U.S. government -- how it works now and how it should work ideally -- can be an important indicator of the health of our democracy.
How do Americans feel about the fundamental rights and principles enshrined in the United States Constitution? How do Americans feel our current President, Congress, and the Supreme Court are doing in upholding the Constitution? Are Americans turning away from the values of a democracy in favor of an authoritarian form of government? To answer these questions, and to better understand the public’s views on recent changes and challenges to the rule of law in this country, the Online Courtroom and the Trust in Justice Projects recently conducted a national survey with Ipsos and a series of online focus groups. The results of that survey and those focus groups are presented in this report along with an analysis of those results.
Sample Online Supplemental Juror Questionnaire as used in Alki Tours, Inc. v. Tyson Verse et al. 19-2-15199-4, in King County, Washington.
This online questionnaire also appears in Appendix F of THE ONLINE COURTROOM: THE FUTURE OF REMOTE TECHNOLOGY IN THE LITIGATION PROCESS (Ken Broda-Bahm & Richard Gabriel eds., forthcoming 2022). This online questionnaire contains some case-specific questions included by agreement of the parties. Had one of the parties objected, the court would not have allowed some of them.
Online Supplemental Jury Questionnaire used for demonstration purposes for the MN v. Derek Chauvin Trial
This online questionnaire was developed for Jeffrey T. Frederick, Online Jury Selection, in THE ONLINE COURTROOM: THE FUTURE OF REMOTE TECHNOLOGY IN THE LITIGATION PROCESS (Ken Broda-Bahm & Richard Gabriel eds., forthcoming 2022) (manuscript at 8-9). It is an adaptation of the written SJQ used in State v. Chauvin, No. 27-CR-20-12646, 2021 WL 2621001, (Minn. Dist. Ct. June 25, 2021) which arose out of the murder of George Floyd. Some modifications were made for clarity purposes. However, the major changes needed to meet traditional online questionnaire design and efficiency were not made in order to retain the original appearance of the written questionnaire. For comparison purposes, the original written SQJ used at trial can be found here.
